A study released by The American Psychological Association in November of 2017 found that 61% of Americans report work as their primary source of stress. Stress in the workplace is different for everyone but the following are general categories:
- Workload
- Job Security
- Problems with Co-Workers
- Problems with Management
- Juggling work/life balance
Often we can feel like work stress is “just part of life” and we should get over it. Perhaps to acknowledge that work is getting to you would be embarrassing or shameful, “If I was stronger / smarter / better this wouldn’t get to me”. Since at least 61% of American adults suffer from the same issue you are probably in good company and not alone. Here are some signs that work stress is becoming or is an issue:
- Feeling overwhelmed
- Sadness
- Anxiety
- Increased use of tobacco or alcohol
- Feeling the need to yell or scream at work
- Less patience with loved ones and friends
- Change in sex drive
- Sleep problems
- Burnout
